My partner has never watched anime and is skeptical of the whole medium. I get one movie night to change their mind, and I'm going Ghibli.

Spirited Away? Totoro? Princess Mononoke? What's the safest pick and why?

  • Skeptical adult who likes drama/history: Princess Mononoke. Serious themes, zero 'anime weirdness' barriers, stunning craft. This is the pick that most reliably converts 'I don't watch cartoons' people.
  • Loves cozy, gentle films: Kiki's Delivery Service or My Neighbor Totoro. Low stakes, pure charm.
  • Loves fantasy/adventure: Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle.

Small practical tip that matters more than the title: watch it dubbed if subtitles would be a chore for them. The Disney-era Ghibli dubs are excellent (Mononoke's script was adapted by Neil Gaiman!), and removing the reading burden lets a newcomer actually watch the animation — which is the argument you're trying to make.
