Just finished season 1 of Dandadan and loved how unhinged it was, aliens and ghosts and turf wars all happening at once. Ive seen people say season 2 is even better animated but that the story gets noticeably heavier and more emotional partway through. Does it still keep that same fun chaotic energy or does the tone shift a lot?
It keeps the chaos, but I'd be lying if I said the tone doesn't shift under you partway through.
Season 2 moves into the Cursed House arc and then the Evil Eye arc, and that second one is where things get genuinely heavy — there's a stretch built around the Mongolian Death Worm's ability that leans into some very dark psychological territory for Momo and Okarun, not played for laughs at all. The direction leans into it too; the palette and framing shift to something colder and more unsettling right when it happens, so it's not just the writing, the whole show visibly changes register for that stretch.
What I appreciated is that it doesn't lose itself doing this. The comedic timing is still there in between, the turf-war absurdity is still there, and the emotional weight actually earns itself instead of feeling bolted on for shock value. It reads more like the story growing up a little than the show becoming a different thing.
So: same DNA, same willingness to be unhinged, but yes, expect at least one arc that hits harder than anything in season 1 emotionally. If you loved season 1 for the chaos specifically and don't want any gut-punches mixed in, that stretch might catch you off guard — but most people (myself included) think it's the stronger season for it.
