Will Hunter x Hunter ever continue? What is the current status of the manga?

I finished the 2011 Hunter x Hunter anime (Election arc) and immediately started the manga's Succession Contest arc. Now I've hit the wall everyone warned me about.

What's the actual current status — is Togashi still working? Is the anime likely to return? How do fans cope with the hiatuses?

Current state of things:

Togashi is alive and writing, but with severe chronic back problems that physically limit drawing. Since 2022 he's worked in bursts: chapters get finished in batches (often ~10 at a time), published, then the series returns to hiatus while he recovers and stockpiles.
The Succession Contest arc continues through those batch releases — the story is not abandoned, and Togashi has shared notes indicating the ending is planned in detail, with contingencies.
Anime: nothing announced. Madhouse's 2011 series covered through Election; there simply isn't enough adapted-ready material yet for a new season, so any continuation news would follow a long manga run, not precede it.

Coping strategies from a veteran: treat new chapters as gifts, not schedules; read the interviews where Togashi discusses his process (genuinely moving); and use the downtime for Togashi's other masterpiece, Yu Yu Hakusho, or the excellent fan-favorite 1999 HxH series for a different vibe.

ok so current status (as of right now, late aug 2026): its NOT dead. Togashi is publishing again, chapters are coming out somewhat regularly but with zero fixed schedule because of his back problems, they just drop whenever a batch is ready. were still in the Succession Contest arc, the Dark Continent Expedition (the "big one" everyone's been waiting for) hasn't even started yet.

anime-wise: nothing announced, don't hold your breath, the studio would need a big buffer of chapters banked before they'd even think about committing to it imo.

how do fans cope with the gaps... honestly? low expectations plus treating every update as a bonus. nobody's mad anymore, we've mostly made peace with "it happens when it happens." kind of freeing once you stop checking for news every week lol
