Why does Death Note only have 37 episodes and one season?

im used to shonen shows dragging on for hundreds of episodes with tons of filler so it was weird seeing Death Note just end at 37 episodes with no second season. did they cut the manga short somewhere or does the story actually fit that neatly into one run
