What is the correct watch order for the Monogatari series?

I want to finally start Monogatari but the release order vs chronological order debate is overwhelming, and there are like 15 entries.

What order do experienced fans actually recommend for a first watch, and why?

Watch in release order. Full stop. This is one of the rare fandom consensuses.

The series was written to be experienced in release order: mysteries are set up seasons before they pay off, character reveals assume you know exactly what release-order viewers knew, and Kizumonogatari (chronologically first) is a hundred times more powerful as a flashback after you've spent two seasons with these characters.

Starter path:

  1. Bakemonogatari
  2. Nisemonogatari
  3. Nekomonogatari: Kuro
  4. Monogatari Second Season (the peak, trust the process)
  5. Hanamonogatari → Tsukimonogatari → Owarimonogatari → Kizumonogatari films → Koyomimonogatari → Owarimonogatari S2 → Zoku Owarimonogatari, then the newer Off & Monster Season adaptations.

Chronological order is a fun rewatch. As a first watch it spoils half the series and frontloads its weakest pacing. Don't do it to yourself.

Dissenting-ish opinion for one specific case: if you've tried Bakemonogatari twice and bounced off, watching the Kizumonogatari films first can work as a hook — they're gorgeous, mostly standalone, and explain Araragi's deal. You lose some mystery but gain momentum. Release order is still the default recommendation though.
